Press + Resistance Course

Press + Resistance (Pressistance) is an online, self-paced course designed to introduce budding citizen journalists (bloggers and social media communicators) to the strategic dynamics of nonviolent social movements so that they can more effectively cover these struggles in ways that will help them succeed.

The course is broken up into the four different modules listed below:

MODULE 1 – What is Civil Resistance?

Objectives: Students will be able to…

  • Define civil resistance.
  • Understand the core dynamics at play in a nonviolent civil resistance movement.
  • Explore a specific, historical case of civil resistance and the various tactics that it used.
  • Hear from activists who’ve participated in nonviolent movements and from scholars who’ve studied them.
  • Discuss the various ways nonviolent actions can be used to apply pressure on power structures.

MODULE 2 – What is Citizen Journalism?

Objectives: Students will be able to…

  • Identify examples of effective citizen journalism.
  • Explore the pros and cons of citizen journalism.
  • Compare and contrast citizen journalism with the mainstream media.
  • Trace the growth of citizen journalism through media’s history.

MODULE 3 – The Role of Media in Civil Resistance

Objectives: Students will be able to…

  • Look at different cases of how digital tools, social media, and citizen journalism have been used in civil resistance.
  • List the various ways digital tech has helped nonviolent social movements.
  • Apply the uses of digital tech to a specific nonviolent social movement.
  • Discuss the future of how digital tools, social media, and citizen journalism can be used in civil resistance.
